Around 30 Gatley residents and traders met at Roasted on Silverdale Road on Wednesday night to brainstorm about ways to improve the village.
The evening was expertly organised by the Gatley Village Partnership and I was there as resident and councillor to help out.
The aim of the evening was to come up with deliverable projects rather than optimistic wish-lists and there were a lot of great ideas from the three tables (roughly speaking, people looking at shops, the environment and special events).
Among the traders there’s interest in pursuing a loyalty card scheme to reward Gatley residents for shopping local and a project to get solar panels onto as many shops as possible. On the environmental side, there was particular concern about litter in the area around Foxland Road and Scholes Fields. The events group came up with some great ideas to build on Gatley Festival with some additional themed weeks through the year.
The next stage will be to pick a small number of projects and put together groups to take them forwards. The Gatley Village Partnership next meets on 10th June at St. James Church Hall.

They could start by ending the nonsense of early closing – for the smaller shops – at c.16:00 on Saturdays.
Apparently this be part of a ‘gentlemens agreement’ between interested parties. 17:00 should be the earliest – 17:30 would be better.
They are supposed to be in business !
I fully endorse Robert Taggart’s comment re Early Closing on Saturdays. I would go a stage further by proposing to abolish the archaic practice of Half Day Closing on a mid-week day.
