Lib Dems secure £200,000 for more Cheadle village improvements

by Lib Dem team on 4 March, 2015

The Lib Dem team have secured an investment of £200,000 in Cheadle village centre to complete the paving works at the east end.

“This funding will allow the final section of paving up to Audio Works to be replaced, improving the look of the whole village and making the pavements safer for pedestrians.” said Lib Dem council candidate Graham Greenhalgh. “We’ve worked hard to ensure the project is completed and I’m very glad that will now be done.”

The proposals still have to be formally approved by the Council and there is a chance that Labour and Conservative councillors could work together to block them – we hope that won’t happen!

Pity this wasn’t all done at the same time, last summer was a nightmare for those of us who LIVE or work in the village (we know the councillors don’t live in Cheadle), so looks like another year of misery. I hope there will be improvements made for wheelchair access and provisions for less mobile people, and perhaps the pavement that leads up to The Alex hospital can be improved, particularly near the memorial cross and by the Ashlea public house/stop the Daniel Maxwell car garage from parking their for sale cars on the pavement blocking pedestrian access!

All the councillors spent a good deal of time in the centre of Cheadle, which is one of the reasons we know new pavements are needed. True, all these schemes have some pain in the implmentation but I think it’s worth it.

    About time too.
And why is the Daniel Maxwell garage allowed to block the pavement with parked cars?

  3. Simon says:

I regulary used to go to a Wednesday club at the Ashlea, meeting similar elderly folk. After my last visit in June last year, I am no longer able to make this short trip from Queens Gardens as the pavement near the Daniel Maxwell cars is regulary blocked by their cars. Due to being I a mobility scooter, this has now forced the one day a fortnight as looked forward to going out and meeting friends. I did complain at one point and also had a traffic warden attend, but the person from Daniel maxwell cars simply moved his vehicles when the warden attended, and then put them back five minutes later.

I, along with others members of the local community, completed a questionnaire about the villages pedestrian issues, outlining this particular issue. I followed this up with SMBC, but still am in the dark whether the pavement outside Daniel Maxwell cars will be bollarded as the opposite side of this road is, to arrest cars being park dangerously on the pavement. Why the council has not forced this issue prior is a mystery.

So here’s hoping that Iain Roberts will make sure this issue can be incorporated into the £200,000 scheme and put Cheadl pedestrians safety at the heart of this planned work.

Hopefully some of this money will go towards bringing back the fountain structure to the allocated space on the green to finish off the good work undertaken already. Is there a date set for this action ??

    • Phillip Gould-Bourn says:

That would be SMBC money.!!!!! All the money raised has been from Cheadle Civic Society. The renovation of the Green is a CCS project-if we can justify the expense of moving the Ockleston Memorial we are looking towards later this year.

      • Geoff S says:

My thanks for your reply Philip and I applaud the good work of CCS but the lead-in article of this news includes the words ” improve the look of the whole village”. Last year I was given to understand that the fountain would be moved this Spring to the newly created circular area on the green to finalise the upgrade. I thought justification of this move had already been discussed with SMBC and agreed?

I make regular trips to the Alexandria, for eye treatment, sometimes walking and have to dodge on part of the road in order to pass the parked cars at the garage, which makes it very precarious.
