St Peter’s Square works to affect Didsbury trams

by Lib Dem team on 23 June, 2015

Anyone who uses the tram line from Didsbury into Manchester needs to be aware of the effect of works in St Peter’s Square over the next few months.

Here’s the email we’ve received:

Dear Councillor,

As you may be aware, we are currently building a new Metrolink route through Manchester city centre, the Second City Crossing (2CC). As part of the 2CC project, our contractor, MPT, is due to undertake major works to redevelop the tram stop at St Peter’s Square from 28 June 2015. This work will require a closure of the stop to passengers and changes to services running through St Peter’s Square for a period of approximately 14 months.

Changes to Metrolink services will take place in 3 phases –

  • Phase 1 (28 June 2015 for eight weeks)No services will run through St Peter’s Square. For customers travelling on the Altrincham, Manchester Airport, East Didsbury, Eccles and MediaCityUK lines, the newly refurbished Deansgate-Castlefield stop will offer the best city centre stop. Services on all other lines will run into Piccadilly. Replacement bus services will offer connections from one side of the city to the other.
  • Phase 2 (late August for ten months) The St Peter’s Square stop will remain closed but trams will continue to run through the city on a temporary single line.
  • Phase 3 (final eight weeks) The same as Phase 1 – no services will run through the St Peter’s Square stop as work finishes to open the new-look stop to passengers.

In preparation for these service changes as stated above, MPT is carrying out a number of advance works at the following locations. Please note that pedestrian routes around these works will be in place and access will be maintained at all times.

In addition, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has now announced details of shuttle bus services and recommended walking routes to help passengers get across the city during the work.

If require any further information regarding these works, please contact me at future.metrolink@tfgm.com.

Kind regards,

Bethan Stanway

  1. Alan Gent says:

All this for no economic reason; the previous ustification for ALL metrolink developments. This is just a vanity project , the money for which could be being spent NOW developing lines into and through SMBC.

As someone mentioned previously, pork barrel politics.

It is somewhat a vanity project but I’d like the money spent on making a nice new square so that we don’t end up with something like the mess Piccadilly Gardens is now.

Plus this work is needed to develop lines going into the city centre, currently 5 lines pass through St.Peter’s Square. This is a lot and to increase the city centre capacity we need to build the 2nd city crossing and SPS needs to be up to the task of allowing all these lines to pass through efficiently. This needs to be done before any new lines like the future Trafford Centre line or any lines to Stockport. Otherwise it’ll be deadlock in the city centre as 8+ lines converge into single lines going through the city centre. Its not like Trams can overtake other trams now is it?
