New toucan crossing being installed by Gatley station

by Lib Dem team on 26 June, 2015

From the Council:

Further to the ongoing works to the pedestrian crossing beneath the rail bridge on Gatley Rd, proposals are now in place to remove the existing signal poles and erect a 4 pole Toucan Crossing.

This work is scheduled for Wednesday 1 July and Thursday 2 July 2015. The majority of the re-cabling work and controller upgrading work will take place on the Wednesday and commissioning of the new crossing should happen on Thursday afternoon.

As you will appreciate, the existing crossing is extremely well used throughout the day and we are therefore arranging for a temporary standalone pedestrian crossing which is battery operated; this will enable Siemens contractors to safely disconnect the old crossing, remove the poles, redundant cables etc and power up the new one without leaving pedestrians in a vulnerable position.

Another example of the council’s continued incompetence when it comes to Gatley’s traffic issues. Thousands wasted on re-designing and re-aligning the pavements at the Horse and Farrier junction to no avail. Now wasting money on a “Toucan” crossing at Gatley Station, the existing pedestrian crossing adequately serves both pedestrians and dismounted cyclists. The dangerous ‘T’ junction outside the Horse and Farrier desperately needs traffic signals, the council continues to argue that the money isn’t there for the badly needed traffic signals, it won’t be if it continues with poor decision making like this. It really does beggar belief. All drivers using this junction fear for their safety when exiting Church Road in the Cheadle direction, it has been a major hazard for many years. I am coming round to the thought that the decision makers are not drivers thus unaware of how difficult and dangerous the junction is, how else is such incompetence explained?

      Hi David,

The crossing upgrade by the station is being funded by the Government’s Cycle City Ambition Grant. We don’t turn away Government money – we use whatever funds we can get to improve the area.
