Policing on South Park Road and Marrick/Richmond Hill

Yesterday was the latest Neigbourhood Policing Team (NPT) meeting, where councillors, Council officers and police get together to go through the issues.  We’re in Stockport West, covering (roughly) Cheadle, Gatley, Cheadle Hulme, Heald Green, Bramhall, Davenport and Cale Green.

Among the issues I raised are:

  • South Park Road Estate – both the need for improved enforcement of the “No Entry except for Access” rule and the issue of parking along Coniston Road and nearby roads.
  • I asked the police to look into reports of Marrick Avenue and Richmond Hill Road being used by some motorists to dodge past a bit of the queue on the Cheadle side of the traffic lights.
  • I also asked for an eye to be kept on graffiti on the underpasses beneath the Cheadle Royal roundabout – and for the Council to give it a paint-over.

If you are in contact with the police we would love to see more footpatrols across Gatley(i) during and half term and (ii) as the dark nights draw in . Last thursday a brick was thrown through my neighbour’s pourch window, while they were in. The culprits weren’t identified.

If this enforcement is successful how is southbound Kingsway traffic expected to join M60?
I suspect there will be an increase in illegal U-turns at the Gatley Road lights. What chance a camera to deter this?
I’ve also seen drivers turn right through the gap in the central reservation that provides access to the old Barnes Hospital site, which is clearly extremely dangerous. Why are there no “No Entry” signs here?
There is no ideal solution. Perhaps the best answer would be to sign a route taking drivers further south on A34 to one of the roundabouts then doubling back.

Trevor – I’m sure you’re right about there being no perfect solution.

As for how southbound traffic is meant to join the M60 – if going west there’s the slip road and if going east, I guess they should be going along Didsbury Road and joining the M60 at the pyramid, or turning round at the Cheadle Royal roundabout.

I’m sure the work the Highways Agency and Manchester Urban Traffic Control has included looking at this sort of issue. I don’t know the outcome yet, or if there’ll money to make those sorts of changes.
