Cheadle Town F.C. – a new stadium?

by Lib Dem team on 15 October, 2010

At Cheadle Area Committee on Tuesday, Cheadle Town Football Club asked for the support of councillors for a plan for the council to sell them the ground.

The ground, on Park Road in Cheadle Hulme North ward, was used as the training ground for the Portguese national  team in the 1966 world cup but is now in poor condition by modern standards and desperately needs improving.

Proposals for the ground include complete redevelopment of the facilities at the Park Road Stadium including a new spectator stand, changing facilities for teams and officials, a new all-weather football pitch and two new five-a-side pitches, a new perimeter fence and railings, plus a new 60m x 40m grass pitch.

The costs of this proposal are estimated at £1.9 million.  The club have identified possible sources of funding, but beleive it will be easier to secure if they own the ground rather than leasing it.

Councillors were very positive about the ground and the plans.  We recommended the Council resolve this quickly and asked for a long term lease or sale to be considered.  Any sale would include a covenant that the site only be used for sport/leisure activities in future.

We look forward to receiving an outline planning application in the near future.

What about access to the stadium ?

I lived on Park Road from 1977 to 1992, and witnessed the change when Cheadle Town took over from Manchester City (Training ground). The new lessees caused significant problems for the residents in terms of spectator parking. An enlarged facility can only make this worse

This is a good facility and should be allowed to develop, Cheadle Town were always accommoddating such as when I was a child they let the varous local beaver groups use the grounds and stand for their Beaver olympics. As for the issue of parking on Park Road I understand some residents concerns but most houses have off street parking so it shouldnt cause much disruption and I would have thought that in this day and age any planning permission would have adequate parking included to get passed.
