Major tree works to start on Cheadle Green

by Lib Dem team on 28 January, 2012

Last year there was a long consultation on what should be done to Cheadle Green, including stalls set up by the Green to get the views of shoppers and passers-by.

The outcome was strong support for a plan to thin out the trees – removing some and cutting back others – to improve the overall feel and appearance of the Green.

This major tree work is scheduled to start on 13th February 2012.

Fabulous, returning it to a green not just a load of trees

Can’t wait – the tree works will enable more sunshine to dry out the grass which is very waterlogged and muddy.

    cheers,

A Band stand that could be used for entertainment and or weddings would be a great addition to an area no one really uses apart from to walk through as a shortcut.

Local schools could be invited to play at weekends and add a more sociable community feel to the area.

Whilst I appreciate and understand that a number of the trees on the Green needed to be removed owing to their close proximity to one another, removing the best tree on the green i.e. the Cedar is a massive oversight. Cedars of this size and quality are locally rare and I am not aware of any other examples in Cheadle. Removing this tree has completely changed the appearance of this side of the green and has removed an effective visual and noise barrier to the busy traffic junction – this will soon become apparent. As an evergreen the Cedar also provided a source of much needed colour during the drab winter months. It is very disappointing for me as I did respond to the consultation plans and did point out the importance of the Cedar tree but no response was forthcoming. Removing trees is not the only option to increasing levels of sunlight to the ground, there is also formative pruning and crown lifting, but it’s a bit late for that now isn’t it!
