Have your say on how we maintain our public green spaces

by Lib Dem team on 8 February, 2012

Stockport Council is encouraging interested parties to give their views on the proposed specification of green space maintenance.

The Council is creating a new Public Realm Service which will commission a wide range of services including the maintenance of public green spaces.

A draft contract document has been produced and the Council welcomes comments and suggestions from interested parties.

The two week consultation starts on Monday 6th February. People can view and comment on the document at www.stockport.gov.uk/haveyoursay

The document includes:
• A framework outlining the relationship between the Council and Solutions SK (the service provider).
• General and specific requirements of the service provider.

Councillor Dave Goddard, Leader of Stockport Council, said: “The Council is committed to providing the best possible services for residents. I would encourage interested parties to take part in the consultation and give their views on the proposed green space specification.”

A summary of the comments made and the Council’s response will be published on the Council website by 31st March.

It could start by listening and acting on concerns made by the volunteers who work so hard to try to maintain the greenspaces in their communities.

We’ve been waiting for the sluice to be repaired on the carrs for almost 6 weeks and at this crucial time of the year for the water birds we have had promises but nothing else. It appears that the work is down to one man’s efforts and he is covering the whole of Cheadle and Gatley and gets the push at the end of March. What hope do we have?

I’ll shut up now before I say things which I may regret!

    Hi Paula,

I wish we had more money to expand the parks service, not to mention the many other things we’d like to spend money on. I will say that I think the Council is working hard to provide the best service we can with the resources available.

I am sure you are working hard but consultations will get us nowhere – actions will. We know exactly what needs to be done and it won’t cost a fortune but nothing happens. However words are cheap. Consultations might placate people into thinking that they are in control but we know better. It is just a sop to the masses. Gatley Carrs Conservation Group are in despair and other Greenspace Friends groups in Stockport are feeling exactly the same.
