Warwick Mall development to start 19th March

by Lib Dem team on 28 February, 2012

Given how many false starts there have been, we’re not quite sure whether to believe this, but we’re assured that the demolition of Cheadle’s Warwick Mall – to be replaced with a Sainsburys on the ground floor and fourteen apartments above – will start on 19th March.

From the week before (12th March 2012), parking spaces in front of the Mall on Massie Street car park will be cordoned off as a works area, with disabled spaces relocated next to the old toilet block.

We expect the development to take about a year to complete, after which the new retail store (which looks like being a Sainsbury’s) will open, and it will be possible to walk through it to use the old short-cut from the High Street to the car park.

Well fingers crossed. A shortcut is needed since the one between quality save and clintons was built on a few years ago and now the mall is gone. Walking between the flower shop and the bookies isn’t the nicest path to go down, particularly when it’s getting dark.

about time to! there’s absolutely nowhere to shop in cheadle, so a sainsurys will be just what is needed! well done the planning team!!

I am not sure if Robert Cohen lives in the same Cheadle as me? Haven’t you noticed the Co-op, Tesco, Iceland, 2 greengrocers, butcher, fishmonger, etc etc? I think we are pretty well off compared to how we used to be.

But how long will the walk through the store last. Iceland had to close theirs due to shop-lifting. Can something be done now at least to get the owners of the building that houses Car Phone Warehouse to finish the roof/dormer work and remove the scaffolding. No room to move round there, and keeping one eye on cars turning especially with prams.

my point was/is with tesco and the co-op do we really need another multi-national putting a strain on all the other small independant stores? why not get asda and morrisons to join in?

Cheadle doesn’t need another supermarket,Hairdressers, charity shop,Restaurant or cheap pie shop! we need good quality shops to bring people into the lovely village, A ladies/Gents/childrens clothes shop would be of use im sure to everyone, I remember when we had Tesco,Woolworths,Burtons,Healds,Tandy, Greenwoods,Timpsons to name but a few, It was great then to come into Cheadle on a Saturday with your wages & buy a new outfit,Without having to go into Stockport…we need to see more QUALITY shops back in our village,NOT SUPERMARKETS!!!!

  7. Penny says:

We DO NOT need another supermarket but if we must have one, why not attempt to court M & S or Waitrose? We were so close to getting M & S a few years ago but due to the climate at the time, Tesco got the plot instead 🙁 I think flats in the village will be nice and it is about time Warwick Mall was sorted. And on that note, when will the George & Dragon work start? We urgently need a nice local food pub. I’m looking forward to the Istanbul Restaurant opening as Weavers has been such an eyesore for so long… we might be known as little Turkey with 3 Turkish restaurants in such close proximity but cosmopolitan is better than run down!!
Some quality clothes shops would be wonderful!

Well said Karen Sandler! And also Karen, I also remember Tesco, Woolworths, Tandy’s and Taylor’s greengrocers, but I also remember the walk through at the side of Norweb to the carpark!
