Gatley Green anonymous leaflet circulated

by Lib Dem team on 22 March, 2012

We’ve been told of an anonymous leaflet being pushed through doors that opposes the changes on Gatley Green – especially the plan to block off the little cut-through road.

At the same time, we’ve continued to receive emails from residents around the Green in support of the plans.

The plans for Gatley Green can be found here. No changes are being proposed on the Green area itself at this stage. The short cut-through road will be blocked off with bollards (there are legal reasons why that’s a better option than removing it completely and grassing it over, though that remains an option for the future). The surface of the road will be improved, new pavements laid at various places and the Tesco end of the road changed to reduce dangerous driving and parking.

The plans have received support from over 80% of those who responded to the consultation (and, of course, all local residents around Gatley Green had ample opportunity to respond).

If the person who circulated the leaflet would like to get in touch, we’d be very happy to discuss it further.

Although not a resident of the green one supports the plans – SO GET ON WITH IT !

  2. Lee Simmons says:

New plans look great, hope they can grass the road over eventually.
More importantly this will improve safety and stop people driving the wrong way, all this for the cost of a bit of parking, opposers should pipe down and think I others. Well done to all involved.

Also supporting the ‘make-over’ for the green.
Still bothered about those ugly, crumbling, concrete posts mind !

Question. Those houses fronting the green with long front gardens – could they not pave over at least half of the garden ? – to provide their own parking ??

To the anonymous leafleter – you can retain your anonymity, but, one question – are you a Gatley Green resident ?
re: DR C – those posts – here, here, here.

Why don’t they just turn the whole of the Green into one big car park too while they’re at it? Answer: Because this is deemed as a conservation area, although you would mistaken for thinking so judging by some of the ridiculous suggestions – the one i’ve quoted sitting top of the pile.

Why are the council so determined to remove as many parking places in Gatley as possible. The cut through at Gatley Green provides parking for the nearby shops and Doctors. We lost several parking spaces when that pointless pedistrian Refuge was introduced by Gatley Green on Church Road. It is no use to anyone it should be placed either where the children cross the road near the Prince of Wales or near the Bus terminus, Tescopage and adjacent shops. We have been denied the use of the Tatton Cinema car park for years now and housing development has been permitted on the only bit of land that would allow an extension to Gatley Station Car Park

  7. Iain Roberts says:

    Hi Trevor,

The Gatley Green changes will lose one parking space, which most residents who have responded clearly feel is worth it for the benefits of not having the cut-through.

The Tatton and railway station sites are both private land.

I agree that we could do with more parking spaces in Gatley and we’re always on the lookout for opportunities to find them. I also want to make more provision for cyclists – if just a few of the people who currently drive into the village were to cycle instead, it would free up parking spaces for others.

  8. John Hartley says:

Perhaps the health centre could be persuaded to allow parking on their site, outside of their normal hours. Seeing as medical practices are commercial businesses contracting to the NHS they could, presumably, make a profit by introducing a small charge.

  9. Trevor McLean says:

I notice that there is to be no waiting outside St James Church. What about funerals and weddings?
You cannot solve the parking problem in Gatley by waiting restrictions you first have to provide car parking space and the council should use its compulsory purchasing powers to achieve this.

If you want to know who sent the leaflet ask the people who run Gatley Festival as they seem keen on re tweeting all GatleyGreeners tweets which is a bit odd seeing as they should be concerned with the festival. Probably the same person. That’s the problem with Gatley residents, they have to be involved with everything and they hate change, which is why the tatton is the way it is!
