Strong support for 20mph around Broadway and Daylesford

by Lib Dem team on 22 March, 2012

After a teenage boy was hit by a speeding car on Broadway, Keith Holloway consulted residents in the area on having a 20mph zone for the roads.

The proposal is to extend the current 20mph zone on High Grove Road and Milton Crescent to include

  • Broadway
  • Daylesford Road
  • Daylesford Crescent
  • Daylesford Close
  • Broadway Avenue
  • Arlington Road
  • Barcheston Road
  • Cherington Road
  • Brookfield Crescent
  • The residential section of Kingsway off Broadway

Over 90% of residents who responded to Keith’s survey have told us they’re in favour of the proposal, so we’ve now asked the Council to conduct a formal consultation as part of the legal process.  If residents are also in favour in the formal consultation, we’ll progress the scheme.

The evidence we have is that 20mph zones do work in reducing the average speed of drivers by a few miles per hour. That might not sound like a lot but, if there’s an accident, it can make the difference between someone receiving a minor injury and them being very seriously injured – or worse.

Some residents have also suggested the 20mph zone include Schools Hill.  We will be looking into this, but because Schools Hill is classified as a main road it’s more complex so we want to keep that proposal separate from the Broadway/Daylesford area.

Iain, High Grove Rd, its already 20mph, but this is ignored on a daily basis. Are there no plans to enforce these limits (and I DON”T mean via speed humps!!!)

    Hi Alan,

Enforcement is down to the police, of course (no, there are no plans for speed humps). However, the evidence we do have, from across the country and locally in Stockport, is that having a 20mph zone significantly reduces the average speed of traffic. That doesn’t mean every single vehicle drives slower – there will always be idiots around, no matter what we do. But it does mean a lot of people driving more slowly.
