Support Earth Hour 2012 on 31st March

by Lib Dem team on 22 March, 2012

Earth Hour 2012 will be held on 31st March, between 8.30pm and 9.30pm. It has been organised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) who are asking households and businesses all over the world to turn off all non-essential lights and appliances during this hour to raise awareness of climate change.

In support of this, Stockport Council will be turning off the external spotlights on the Town Hall and is also asking its employees and residents to take part in the initiative by switching off their lights at home for one hour.

Councillor Shan Alexander, Executive Member for the Environment, said: “The Council is fully committed to becoming a leading ‘Green’ borough. We are delighted to be supporting Earth Hour 2012 which is a small but important step to reducing climate change.

“Earth Hour sends a very powerful message to people about the need to take positive and urgent action to tackle climate change. I would urge borough residents and businesses to support Earth Hour on 31st March – small changes such as switching off unnecessary lights and appliances can make a real difference.”

Climate change and global warming and cooling have gone on since the earth was formed.

How much if any is due to man made causes (Anthropogenic Climate Change) is the issue – what we do know is that in the last 100 years the global mean temperature in total has only increased by 0.7C (yes thats less than 1C in a 100 years). Also 2011 was a cold year and the global mean has not increased in a statistically significant sence in the last 15 years.

In my view the jury is out on this issue and the country to borrow huge sums to fund highly inefficient PV and wind power schemes, especially when we hover near bankrupcy in the national finances is not the best use of our resources.

This earth hour by Stockport Council is quite irrelevant given China and India are massively ramping up CO2 output via construction of approximately 1 new coal fired power station a week, the US has not signed the acords and will not be doing so, and the UK accounts for less than 2% of global CO2 output.

Finally CO2 is not a pollutant as is often stated – if there were no CO2 there would be no food to eat and Global temperatures would be so low that life on Earth would be impossible.

This subject is not settled yet and the eventual outcome will in all probability be very much less alarming than often mentioned. Indeed its already much less alarming than claimed only a few years ago.

I will not be following earth hour.
