Network Rail work by Scholes Fields

by Lib Dem team on 21 May, 2012

We’ve been informed that Network Rail’s contractors will be setting up a compound in the car park of William Scholes Fields, Gatley (by the pavilion) for the next four weeks.

This will allow them to carry out essential works to the railway embankment.

The contractor will be leafleting local resident to inform them of the action required hopefully this work will be carried out with the minimum of disturbance.

I hope this doesn’t mean they are going to cut down all the trees again on the railway embankment. I received a letter from Network Rail in Dec 2011 stating that they would be carrying out ‘essential maintenance’ on the embankment on Sat 17/12 but it didn’t happen. They had already cut everything down by the bridge and next to 1 Oakwood Avenue, but the rest has been left. Even the debris has been left behind!

The trees were last cut down in 2003 and Network rail absolutely decimated the embankment. It was very distressing to see the destruction and it isn’t warranted because British Rail used to maintain the embankment without cutting trees down. I’ve lived next to the embankment for nearly 30 years, and British Rail used to come every year, not to cut the trees down, but to cut them back and remove debris, from the embankment. Why can’t Network Rail do the same.

Completely agree!the embankment could do with a tidy up but certainly not to decimate all the trees again. The trees can hide some of the railway noise for the houses if albeit a little. It wouyld be good if Network Rail could take away any rubbish as people are using teh embankment as a dumping ground. I believe I reported to you an electrical appliance dumped some time ago on oakwood avenue section, but true to form it is still there.
