To mark the start of its new ‘Safer in Stockport’ initiative, the Safer Stockport Partnership has revealed that crime has fallen in the borough for eight consecutive years.

The Safer Stockport Partnership, which includes Stockport Council and Greater Manchester Police, is working to ensure that the downward trend continues into 2012-13.

Stockport’s eight year reduction in crime means it is currently safer than the Devon seaside area of Torbay.

In Stockport between 2007-2012:
· There were 12,087 fewer victims of crimes (a fall of 40%);
· Serious violence has reduced by 48%;
· Burglary has reduced by 962 victims or 41%;
· Anti-social behaviour nearly halved in the last two years;

In 2011-12 compared to 2010-11:
· There were 913 fewer victims of all crimes (a fall of 5%);
. Anti-social behaviour was reduced by 21% or 3,196 crimes;
· Acquisitive crime was reduced by 9.8% or 371 crimes;
· Burglary was reduced by 16% or 260 crimes;

Councillor Mark Weldon, Executive Member for Supporting Communities, said: “This is a remarkable set of statistics. Crime has fallen in Stockport for a record eight years and we want this trend to continue. The Safer Stockport Partnership (SSP) uses a range of crime prevention measures to help protect Stockport residents from becoming victims of crime.

“Over the next eight weeks, the SSP has organised a series of Safer Stockport initiatives with the aim of providing the Stockport community with the information they need to protect them from experiencing crime.”

Initiatives include preventing excessive use of alcohol during Euro 2012, vehicle crime, activities of loan sharks and antisocial behaviour. Crime reduction and personal safety information will be provided at an off-road bike crush, as well as in local pubs, colleges,
community events and shopping centres.
