Councillors press for tough action on football parking

by Lib Dem team on 16 October, 2012

Following complaints from residents, the Lib Dem team are speaking to the Police and Council about how further action can be taken to stop problem football parking around Grange Park Road, Cheadle and Beech Avenue, Gatley.

Recent attempts to tackle the problem by asking the clubs to get people to park considerately have failed, and we don’t want to use the ultimate sanction of stopping them playing football altogether.

The Police have agreed to patrol on football days and issue Fixed Penalty Notices to cars causing an obstruction (to the pavement, on the road or blocking people’s driveways). We are also looking at other action that can be taken, both to remind people of the need for responsible parking (even if it means an extra minute’s walk) and sanctions that might be taken against those clubs where the problem remains.

Obviously the parking spaces in the sportsfield are insufficient and need to be increased. It is nice to see the sportsfield being well used after many years of neglect.

We walk our dogs on Scholes Playing fields and pick up any mess the dogs may make .
Pity the footballers. parents spectators don`t tidy up after themselves with empty bottles, food etc .
This should be monitored too !

It’s not just the parking which is problem with the Scholes Park footballers. I run and walk my dogs in Scholes Park when adult football games are on and am subjected to obscene sexist comments from the players as well as having to witness the filthy animals urinating against the trees at the top end of the park. Also, they often leave their litter at the end of the games.

    Hi Iain,

It’s admirable that Councillors and the local Police are to sort out the inconsiderate parkers on Grange Park Road but the nearest (parkable) Road would appear to be Warren Avenue which is already heavily parked up from 6.30am each day by postmen, office workers, shoppers ! – presumably Residents on Warren can rely on the same support from Councillors and the Police should there be problems from football parkers?

    Cheers,

Hi Kath – yes, of course. The issue is inconsiderate parkers blocking driveways and causing an obstruction, not any specific location.

The Massie Street car park is no further from the footall pitches than Warren Street so, especially on a Sunday when parking’s free, there’s absolutely no excuse.
