WINTER WASSALE AND CHRISTMAS MARKETS CONFIRMED FOR STOCKPORT

It’ll be double the festive cheer in Stockport now that a medieval ‘Winter Wassale’ event – including a Handmade Market – AND special festive market will both go ahead at Stockport Market, in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

The Winter Wassale festival, originally planned for Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 December, will now take place a week earlier on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 December. The festival will celebrate Stockport Market’s historic origins with winter ales, ciders, meads, hog roast, pies and medieval themed entertainment. On the Sunday between 11am – 4pm it will run alongside the regular Handmade Market, offering a wide variety of stalls selling local produce, handmade goods and all sorts of unique gift ideas for Christmas.

Market traders will be running a special Christmas market on Sunday 23 December, offering great shopping as well as festive fun for all the family.

Councillor Iain Roberts, Executive Member for Economic Development and Regeneration at Stockport Council, said: “Our market is the beating heart of the town centre and this Christmas it promises to really get people talking about, and visiting Stockport. I’m delighted that both of these fantastic events are going ahead. If anyone’s looking for festive fun, great shopping and exciting events this Christmas then look no further than Stockport!”

John O’Mara, President of the National Market Traders Federation Stockport branch and Chair of Stockport’s Town Team, commented: “It’s great news that Stockport Market can now open on Sunday 23rd December and I’d like to thank the Council and organisers of the Winter Wassale for being so accommodating and our customers for their support. We’re going to put on a fantastic event for all the family, so I’d like to invite people of all ages, from far and wide, to come and see what Stockport Market has to offer.”

Corin Bland, organiser of the Winter Wassale festival and owner of High Peak Beer Co, added: “The recent Stocktoberfest event was a great success and we got lots of really positive feedback from people saying they’d like to see more similar events at Stockport Market. The Winter Wassale promises to offer even more delicious food, excellent beers and entertainment for all the family, but with an added measure of Christmas cheer. Make sure you get your tickets before they sell out!”

Janis Baker, organiser of Stockport Handmade and Producers Market, said: “I am delighted to be able to offer space within the market hall on our regular Handmade and Producers Market date to the Winter Wassale. Working together we will be offering a fully inclusive event including the very best crafts, gifts and local produce. The day provides a one stop chance to shop for Christmas and indulge in some very festive cheer.”

Tickets for the Winter Wassale event will be available to buy from the High Peak Beer Stall in the Covered Market Hall and the Tourist Information Centre in Staircase House in the Market Place from 20th October.
