Metrolink Airport line extension – M60 and M56 24 hour motorway junction closures

by Lib Dem team on 19 October, 2012

Work is underway to build the Metrolink extension to Manchester Airport. The line will extend from the South Manchester line at Chorlton and run on 14.5km (9 miles) of new track over the Mersey Valley and into Wythenshawe crossing the M60 and M56 motorways, continuing through to Wythenshawe town centre and on to Manchester Airport.

These works will require a 24 hour closure of each motorway, although the two closures will not take place on the same date.

M60 – The closure will be between junctions 5 and 8 from 10pm on Saturday 3rd November to 10pm Sunday 4th November 2012. The motorway lanes will start to be reduced and affected slip roads closed from 9pm on Saturday 3 November 2012 in anticipation of the full closure.

M56 – The closure will be between junctions 5 and 2 from 10pm on Saturday 24th November to 10pm Sunday 25th November 2012. The motorway lanes will start to be reduced and affected slip roads closed from 9pm on Saturday 3 November 2012 in anticipation of the full closure.

Re M56 closure, ptesume last sentence should read 24th November

Iain this begs a far wider question, since the metro is going right up to Milnrow, for example.
Why is it that not one foot of metrolink track is being laid in SMBC? We are part of GMPTE, so why is is that we are not getting any of this extremely useful service when quite often an extra mode of transport (in Cheadle for example) would be extremely beneficial?
If something has happened, some deal has been struck, between GMPTE and SMBC we have a right to know.

    Hi Alan,

I don’t think it’s any great secret: we’d like Metrolink to come to Stockport. We have two possible routes for it to come in and land is currently being reserved for both of them. TfGM has decided that it won’t do so in this phase; so we continue working on that for future.

As to why that decision’s been made, you’d have to ask TfGM and the Combined Authority. Some might say that a Labour controlled body has chosen to extend Metrolink to Labour areas first, but TfGM would strongly deny that and say that it goes where the need is; and also point out that TfGM is funding a big chunk of the Manchester Airport – A6 Relief Road.

It’s certainly true that Stockport has over 20% of the rail stations and rail journeys of Greater Manchester, so we’re already strongly catered for on that front; but it’s also true (in my view) that we would benefit greatly from getting Metrolink.

Presumably the line that’s nearly completed between Chorlton and East Didsbury could be extended into Stockport, relatively easily?

  5. DR C says:

East Didsbury – Stockport ( partly utilising old trackbed, then new on-street section through town centre) – Bredbury (utilising an old trackbed) – Ashburys (over existing trackbed) – Metrolink (! new section to somewhere near Sports City ?) + Bredbury – Romiley – Marple (again, utilising existing trackbed, plus, possibly new on-street section up to village centre ?).
As extensions go – how does that sound ?
