A6 to Manchester Airport relief road – have your say

by Lib Dem team on 24 October, 2012

The consultation on the proposed A6 to Manchester Relief Road (also known as the A555 extension or SEMMMS scheme) is underway, and runs to 25th January 2013.

The three councils promoting the scheme (Cheshire East, Stockport and Manchester) are keen to get views from everyone on the overall scheme and six places where there are different design options (e.g. the current Stanley Green roundabout, which could become a larger light-controlled roundabout or a crossroads).

You can see all the information on the scheme and have your say here.

Twitter users can follow the @SEMMMSA555 account for the latest information.

We’re letting as many people as possible know about the consultation, through everything from adverts on buses to Twitter, from leaflet drops to exhibitions across the route.

    A desperately needed Stockport ‘Southern By-pass’ !
Although not a motorist oneself – one be a road user – buses. So anything that takes away those dammed motorists – particularly solo / driver only motorists from our local roads – has our blessing !
    GET ON WITH IT !

They are cutting an new 3rd lane on the A555/A34 junction for additional traffic coming from the east and going north. It strikes me that the A34 through Cheadle/Gatley will be unable to cope with all the extra Manchester bound traffic that currently goes through Stockport and will be siphoned off the A6 (ex Buxton) and A523 (ex Macclesfield) routes.

I think that’s a valid concern Trevor, and it’s exactly why there have been several detailed traffic surveys and extensive modelling to see if the new road will lead to increased traffic levels around Cheadle/Gatley.

Their conclusion, when looking at all the different journeys people make, is that it will reduce traffic but it’s important that we look at these issues in detail and do the research to get it right.

I use the Stanley Green round about every working day. The idea of a round about is that it’s self regulating but at Stanley Green it is the public foot crossings that cause traffic to sit on the round about stopping the free flow. I think any new layout should have foot bridges such as the slip road at rosco’s round about in Cheadle. With foot crossings further away on the two side roads nearer to the Pointing Dog and the entrance to Stanley Green trading estate.

Whilst I’m against the new road, road traffic WILL increase through Cheadle I have no doubt, if it is to be built, it should not have any roundabouts at all but off and on ramps. Roundabouts restrict flow as anyone travelling up the A34 will testify

  6. Frederick Kenny says:

Stanley Green roundabout(s) are a nightmare. As mentioned they are restricting, a full flow clover leaf design is needed – also pedestrians and cyclist need to be kept completely apart from the heavy road usage to prevent serious flow interruptions and road dangers to all parties. The increasing number of cyclists riding two abreast oblivious to road conditions, and cyclist’s undertaking in traffic is extremely dangerous and irritating and I hope the planners remove the cyclist/motorist interaction in any of the new roads and junctions.

  7. Iain Roberts says:

Alan – I appreciate your views. If you have evidence on traffic flows that shows an increase in traffic through Cheadle is likely, please do pass it on. We have the official data collection that’s been done over several years, but very happy to look at additional data.

Frederick – improvements to the Stanley Green roundabout is part of the proposals and there are two different options which have been suggested and we’re looking for people to respond to the enquiry with their preference.

  8. Frederick Kenny says:

Have just had a look at the options for Stanley Green – its on Page 7. Two options – the first is a massive roundabout with traffic lights (similar to the \roundabout from hell\ at the Pyramid, the other option is an ugly block traffic light system somewhat like the Kingsway lights in Cheadle / Gatley. That either can respresent an improvement is questionable.

Given that Woodford Road Bramhall passes over the new road with side ramps (page 8) and is puny in traffic terms compared to the A34 dual carriageway this looks bad design to me. The money should be spent here which is traffic nightmare.

I will be making these comment on the user response.

  9. Frederick Kenny says:

Further to my previous post have just attempted to make my comments and the only options are option 1, option 2 , no preference , don’t know. I don’t agree with any of these “options” . Its impossible to make any real comments – so much for a real consultation!

  10. Iain Roberts says:

Frederick – the way it’s been approached is that the people working on the road have looked at what the possible options taking into account the traffic modelling, what we know about how junctions do (and don’t) work and of course the available budget.

Where that exercise has come up with different options, those are being proposed.

  11. Peter Flitcroft says:

Finally after 40 years we are (hopefully) getting a road that bypasses Hazel Grove. I regularly make a journey from Urmston to Whaley Bridge and this will make my personal journey so much easier.
