By-election in Bramhall South and Woodford

by Lib Dem team on 23 October, 2014

A local by-election will be held in Bramhall South and Woodford to elect a new councillor following the shock resignation of Conservative Anita Johnson.

The Lib Dem candidate, Jeremy Meal, is a transport professional who’s lived locally in Bramhall for 20 years. He stood for the Lib Dems in May, nearly halving the Conservative majority.

The by-election, which will be held on Thursday 20th November 2014, looks set to be a close contest between the Conservative candidate and Jeremy Meal – the other parties are a long way behind.

Why does Mr. Meal in his innumerable pamphlets not explain why Liberal Lenny Grice gave casting vote for Woodford housing to go a head?

    • Iain Roberts says:

      Hi Diane,

Planning law is clear: planning decisions are not about whether you like or agree with an application, but whether it’s in line with national and local planning policy.

The clear and consistent advice the council had from the planning professionals was that the application was in line with policy. If it had been refused, the applicants would have appealed and then would have sued the council for costs. That meant voting against the application wouldn’t stop the houses, but would probably have landed council taxpayers with a bill for several hundred thousand pounds.

Unlike local Conservatives who have flip-flopped on the issue (most of them voted for it at area committee), Jeremy Meal and Mark Hunter have been consistent in their opposition to 900+ houses on the BAE site and have been calling for a public enquiry.
