Remembrance services across Stockport

by Lib Dem team on 27 October, 2014

Stockport Council, in conjunction with local branches of the Royal British Legion, has helped to organise commemorative services and events in the borough on Remembrance Sunday (9th November) and Armistice Day, Tuesday 11th November.

On Remembrance Sunday, The Mayor of Stockport, Councillor Kevin Hogg, will lead the borough in paying respects at the Civic Service at Stockport War Memorial, by Stockport Art Gallery, in the town centre.

At precisely 11.00am there will be a two-minute silence, ending with the Last Post. Following prayers and hymns, and a reflection given by The Archdeacon of Macclesfield, The Venerable Ian Bishop, wreaths will be laid on the steps of the War Memorial. To involve young people in the proceedings, representatives of local youth organisations will lay the wreaths.

The Mayor is asking local residents to support the Royal British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal which provides the main source of funds to maintain the Royal British Legion’s many welfare and benevolent schemes.

The Council will join the Royal British Legion in observing a two-minute silence on Armistice Day, Tuesday 11th November. At precisely 11.00am, the Mayor will observe the silence at Stockport War Memorial, by Stockport Art Gallery.

To mark the beginning and end of the silence (at 11.00am and 11.02am) maroon rockets will be launched from the civic complex. The sound should be heard for up to two miles away, and residents and shoppers should not be alarmed.
