by Lib Dem team on 28 January, 2015

Stockport Council has received a green light from the Secretary of State for Transport to build the long-awaited A6 to Manchester Airport Relief Road, and construction could start in earnest as early as March 2015. The new road has long been a key campaign for local MP Mark Hunter.

Stockport Council yesterday received notification from the Secretary of State for Transport that the Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) and Side Roads Order (SRO) for the A6 to Manchester Airport Relief Road have been confirmed.

The Secretary of State for the department for Communities and Local Government also confirmed the Council’s Section 19 certificate in respect of public open space.

Confirmation of the orders now allows Stockport Council, on behalf of its partners Cheshire East and Manchester City Councils, to move the project, which is a key element in the strategic infrastructure for Greater Manchester (GM), having been clearly identified as a priority project in the first GM City Deal with Government, to the construction phase.

It is anticipated that some environmental works could start before the end of February with the main contract works commencing in March 2015. The expected duration of the works will take 2.5 years and the road should be open to traffic by autumn 2017.

Cllr Sue Derbyshire, Leader of Stockport Council said: “As part of our ‘Investing in Stockport’ initiative we are committed to continually developing Stockport so that it is a great place to live, work and visit for all. Key to this is ensuring that residents and businesses have easy access across the borough and that our transport links develop so that they can meet the demands of modern life.

“We are delighted that the Secretary of State has considered the Public Inquiry Inspector’s report and confirmed the Order, which will allow an early start on the construction of the road scheme to be undertaken.”

The proposed scheme will provide approximately 10km of dual carriageway, linking the A6 at Hazel Grove to the eastern end of the existing A555 at Woodford Road, Bramhall and from the western end of the existing A555 at Wilmslow Road, Handforth to Manchester Airport.

By improving access to south east Manchester and east Cheshire, the A6 to Manchester Airport Relief Road will benefit communities and the local economy, in particular assisting the potential growth of Manchester Airport and Airport City as well as areas of Stockport, Manchester and Cheshire East.

The ‘Stockport Southern Bypass’ – not a moment before time.

  2. D C Johnson says:

Close access from this road to the A34 to alleviate some of the A34 traffic by signing Manchester access from the relief road via the motorways.

  3. Alan Gent says:

Yes and please build on/ off ramps instead of roundabouts, the latter just cause the congestion the bypass is supposed to solve!

Its vital that this road also alleviates traffic on the A34 and does not increase connectivity.

i agree about ramps, but what about the cyclists. there wont be road markings for them to ignore…….

and cutting out access from the A34 is a good idea

Splendid! I hope the short section by-passing Heald Green is one of the first sections to be built and opened. The northbound traffic turning right from Styal Rd., into Heald Green is horendous at peak times and I suspect some of it uses the residential, 20mph Brown Lane as a rat run to avoid queueing delays at the lights.

Should be carried in to Bredbury and reddish as originally planned since the traffic tgere at peak hours is a nightmare
