On Sunday afternoon I had the honour of attending the induction of Rabbi Chanan and Rebbetzen Nechama Atlas at the Yeshurun Synagogue. The Yeshurun is a Modern Orthodox synagogue at the junction of Gatley Road and Kingsway in Gatley, and a place where I have always received a warm and friendly welcome.

The induction of a new Rabbi and Rebbetzen was led by Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, who I was very pleased to welcome to Stockport. The Chief Rabbi is a warm, funny and engaging speaker – clearly a great asset to the Jewish community. Rabbi Chanan Atlas spoke of his own family history around a theme of sacrifice and Rebbetzen Nechama Atlas talked of some of her family memories too.

The Yeshurun community has long worked with other faiths, and has built close links with the Cheadle Muslim Association. Rabbi and Rebbetzen Atlas look keen to continue that work, attracting new members to the Yeshurun at the same time as working with other Jewish congregations and other faiths for the benefit of our community.
